This is the Ben line of paint by Benjamin Moore. I love using this paint, it goes on great and leaves a smooth finish. It still went on great even though it's been sitting there for two years.

I have been looking for a little dresser to tuck away in J's closet. I needed some extra storage for all those little things that girls need. Like headbands, bows, tights, all that good stuff.

I spotted this little piece at the end of someone's driveway. I did a slow drive by and it looked pretty good. However, the house owner was sitting on the front porch. Hmmm, I didn't feel like curbside shopping with an audience but I then thought "what the heck?" so I turned around and stopped.

Up close I could see there was a "free" sign but I still asked the man if he was giving it away, just in case. It was more than a little awkward loading it up while this guy watched me mess around with taking out the carseats. It was a good thing I was without the kids so I could flip down my backseat to fit it in.

The top drawer was a little wonky
but a new guide was all it needed to
straighten it out. I picked up a new at

Home Depot for a couple bucks.

I switched out the middle handles for these fun butterfly knobs I found at Michaels and used up some more the Benjamin Moore, Waterfall that I used on J's other dresser. Although that paint is still not gone so look forward to ANOTHER aqua paint job sometime in the future.

This is a pair of nightstands I picked up from Kijiji for a great price. They are old and solid but were a little beat up in places and needing a little work. One corner was chipped off so I had to sand down all the other corners to match. The back of one of them needed to be replaced since someone had once cut a wonky hole in it. Another set back was the stain; it kept bleeding through my primer. I bought a spray can of Zinsser BIN which covered everything no problem.

I'm still trying to finish up some old cans of paint I have around here. I know you'll be completely shocked to see something painted aqua around here. This isn't even that last of the aqua paint. I have so much paint to go through before I even think about getting some new colours. This particular colour is mostly Para's Rescue Me but lightened up with a bit of Benjamin Moore's Blue Bonnet.

I used my sprayer with these which was really helpful getting in between those little columns in the front. I used some more pages from my Mosaic Memories scrapbook paper and mod podged the front of the drawers. I also mod podged the inside of the drawers with some wallpaper I found at Goodwill a loooong time ago. I protected the paint and paper with some polycrylic using my Purdy brush which does a great job of not leaving brush strokes.

These knobs were picked up at the Habitat for Humanity Restore. Originally they were brass but I gave them a coat of primer and a coat of white. I used some blue and gold craft paint to show off the details.

My family room had a coffee table problem. I had some...just the wrong ones. They were all wrong for my giant, overstuffed, <strike>ugly</strike> comfy sofas.

I was looking for something a little bigger and lot more rustic. I also wanted something with a shelf underneath to hold baskets and help control toys/clutter. Oh, and cheap, of course! While searching Kijiji I wasn't finding anything that fit that criteria. But I did find these cheap glass tables that could work with a little tweaking.

(these are not my actual tables. I forgot to take a before picture with the glass and I found these online)

Before buying them I made sure that the glass could easily be removed for what I had planned. It was only held on by suction cups (that are removable) so I was good to go. I hit up Lowes for some 1x6's, wood stain and some extra sandpaper because I was going to need it.

I measured out the lengths and widths that I would need for the boards to be exactly lined up with the edge of the frame. After cutting everything (using the table saw) I distressed the wood a bit by bashing it with a hammer, poking nails in it, and smashing screws in it. Then I started sanding. And sanding, And sanding. It took a while to sand all 13 boards smooth. After all that sanding I was <strike>sore</strike> ready to stain with Minwax's Chestnut in a gel stain.

I attached the boards together using a strip of 1x2 underneath. I cut the 1x2 to fit exactly into the frame so the top doesn't slide around. If not being attached to the frame starts to be a problem then Mr. 50 is going to weld on some little brackets for me.

I love the size and storage they provide. A big improvement over my tiny, french provincial tables that just didn't suit my family room.

After a little time passed, I added some black upholstery tacks (found at Lowes) to ends of the coffee table. I like added detail.

So now I don't have a coffee table problem anymore but I might have an ikea overload problem. Between the rug, the picture frames and now the tables it's starting to look like an ikea catalog in here :/
But finally I found the right project to try it on. I found these little end tables at Goodwill for $8. For the pair! I was pretty excited about that.
I love finding little pieces to work on since painting dressers no longer works for me. I have two carseats in my backseat and can't flip down one side to accommodate bigger stuff.

When I first saw these tables I knew I finally had a project to use a little sample of black paint that I bought a loooong time ago. This is the look I had in mind.

The tops got a good sanding
and then a beating for some
extra rustic factor and then
stained Minwax's Chestnut
in a gel stain. I know a lot of
other bloggers seem to love
the gel stains but I was not
impressed. The black satin
paint finish looked fantastic but I was still determined to try the distressing.

It's a lot easier to buy furniture online right now since I don't have to take the girls in and out of the car. Also it's a for sure thing instead of trekking to Goodwill, finding nothing and walking away empty-handed.

I have to admit that I wasn't too sure that a coat of paint was going to save this table. It's kinda ugly, yes? But it was nearby and the price was right. Once again I used Benjamin Moore, Waterfall and sprayed the original hardware with Tremclad, Hammered Brown.
However, I did get over there recently with just the littlest babe and picked up this cute little nightstand.
I really dig the cutesy, vintage shape. Obviously it's perfect for a girl's room which I really enjoy doing pieces for. Sorry little dudes out there!
I'm using up a couple cans of paint I have before I buy anything new so you're going to be seeing some repeat colours.

This is the Benjamin Moore, Waterfall that I used to paint J's dresser. I'm still in love with this colour!
Mod podge is still my favorite way to add something unique to pieces so I used some pages from the Mosaic Memories paper pad from Michaels. Love this paper pad!

Yes? Okay, moving on then.

This is more of a test post than anything. I'm trying out the new Blogger and using Chrome which I don't normally use. Have I ever mentioned that I hate change? Hate it. Anyways, the only thing I have to post about is this great lamp I picked up at Goodwill.
It's a little scary, no?

Silly me thought the bad paint job would be easy to remove since it was doing a good job of that all by itself. Sigh, when will I learn? The very first dresser I stripped was so easy and every one since has been a nightmare. And each time I swear "never again".

After I stripped and sanded (and sanded and sanded) the dresser received a new and improved paint job. The colour is Benjamin Moore, Waterfall in semi-gloss. I just love this colour, it's just so light and airy. Where are you, Spring?!?!

I bought this little retro nightstand for $3.99 at Goodwill. I love when pieces are cheap because they're so ugly.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjWKhzqqaze-XSpALtPPYzN8gwCLcMMEAMDDDdYzkwAIX86slxF9s3Nxx0qjZpWLWPpDzAcBUQyHK5Gm6hZl_O1sB3uF5ZdarD0Gtz56EU-MZUk6BM3kqiC1xQeun12ir-AGoHzDx36os/s320/DSC02334.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588805727678186498" />

It needed a little work before I could start painting. It was missing a knob and I thought the surviving one was a little too small. I found another knob off a previous retro nightstand I did so I filled in the holes and drilled new ones. I sprayed the gold knob and the legs with a brown hammered spray paint. I also didn't like the recessed grid pattern on the drawer so I filled it in with wood filler and sanded smooth.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLRgfwF5ywP99pCNT6zLjDgjHuFh78u1AhCQhh24CG6z63m8mDuBhGXskm_OXbob9w_hiSP_QOrHYlogsJzQNSZJa1g9T-2z29aCh91O8eNa1TR8QrktCuQJL1AlzzC1RqdGK-PwTpBSo/s320/DSC02337.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588805731430442338" />

After that work I was ready to prime and paint. I'm trying to work through all the paint I have before buying any new mistints. I mixed together two whites I had and then added some red to make the pink for a stencil and the cubby hole.

After painting the nightstand white I made a stencil using contact paper. If you want to try this just remember you have to reverse your image before drawing it onto the back of the paper. If you press down on the contact paper really well (and not use a lot of paint) it will make a nice clean line. If there's any separate pieces of the stencil you can use a pin to peel up carefully.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 161px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL45g-wxzYvFKbmOput-Dz_ijtli0VhKIb85X1bzl8oH2v91ivmlZHfN_OFlrEk704hV9gIG9k614Qrgzgwi_Vg3jsIr06fSHlpw6F_mQa65-zNnz6cXx5PA10rUUxyfOLmL0AWnBVIvU/s400/DSC02342a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588926212806821394" />

I used Modpodge to line the drawer with a cute piece of scrapbook paper I had in my craft stash.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 237px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg67UrK9BYG1bzcfS63Zh88Mop9GLqtUlHD-wuNuc22lyKcO1mTk7Uc2b0-yEusoRNBKu8O1j6ygYyjL0osq9SLADdck5IvehGHyzIp302PfQ9F6NG7QdXrh-Jn0mEWdBetWOeZB7TpXhE/s320/DSC02350b.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588924255956918098" />

I loved how this little lady turned out. In fact that's all I used to do until the cold weather hit. I haven't painted anything in a long time so I picked up something little to ease back into it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn4TNnP8EofoIg2nsJPJx1UxoUvbOxIQ4LwAM7ncnDYuMoCUOzBjIEtbxMND0l3l9C22lsh1dr_h2Pf4ixEbUPGhm0ycocvLCMMHvrSgUzsrO8aC4ie_GD-xiYU2Yv8Bht7GTaOnQbSls/s320/DSC02302.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581023889399203730" />

I bought this solid wood nightstand at Goodwill. And let me tell you the pickings are slim in there. I only bought one thing at a time last year (so I didn't fill up the garage) but now I can see that I need to stock up the winter. I can't wait until people start their spring cleaning!

No real prep needed with this one, just a quick sand and a coat of primer. I did have a hard time picking the paint colour I wanted. I ended up using the aqua I used on the french provincial dresser since I had lots left over and I paid full price for that can, ouch!

I had picked up the knob at Michaels a loooong time ago and matched it to some scrapbook paper to line the drawer with. It's my dream that someday Michaels will have the knob selection that Hobby Lobby has. Or better yet, Hobby Lobby comes to Canada! Come on Hobby Lobby, we got Ketchup Chips and Poutine here! You know you love it!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq96_nF0kMqLVtEJwDBzPe8LxzUsQ73HjHDhpLHQb_IaSrEyNzw39N1mXVIgAd77oeo9XrvU1com6Ds1tVh1x15aT20kt2d_JD9tvVoN53VGAotbbIXgVu3nVMcaehqOQUR09jANv9S-c/s320/DSC02327.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581026013741782978" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9-05dUQ7oTLOXxV2V2s4mO8yKrwVdU07ou1UeD63iqwISbAZgexB2KJ7XzY34X5_IGEx72TxrUpFpWRaEqm0Jyv93Z1cEgd_QYG85BF2mXHNcCnX07pmdf-cmVvBefdkefvQZ1-9OQ7A/s320/DSC02316.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581023167073076514" />

So I'm left with an adorable little nightstand, nothing so special or original but I think it's cute!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigC5VYMLsTBgEx7qUCwxUkqnjdktDu8lGMPCQbSBdFM9sS_AS35l4hvbQeAEEx5n4o4c3OE03p74-60n7XyDifBqGpi7p_8UjGPQisqFQlp8svESQCwZFhIf2-XqsKFmE4xyjMBt2qz0Q/s320/DSC02315.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581864794610477634" />

Almost forgot! She wanted it to match the bedding for her little girl's bedroom. Everyone gave lots of great advice on how I should go about painting the dresser inspired by this bedding:

I gave her two different sketches for her to pick from. She picked option B.

Here's what the dresser looked like when I brought it home. Definitely not pretty enough for a little girls room. I took off the hardware, filled in the holes, sanded, primed and painted.

I drew the flowers out on paper and then arranged them on the dresser to make sure I had the scale right.

When I thought it looked good I traced them onto the dresser. After that I just got to work mixing colours with my acrylic paints and painting in the flowers. I tried my best to match the colours exactly to bedding.
I love the way it turned out! I'm bringing it back to her this weekend, I can't wait for her to see it. I hope she loves it!
It was originally listed as free one day and then it disappeared. The next day it showed up again for "best offer". I offered $20 and even though they had another offer of $25 they sold it to me since I could pick it up immediately. Yay!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-3jh4DP6qES-m9TFncNXEYqpWZ4Fr474RhI134WPwuSWRzU4P7XjRLIngsoEuCN_nuwm9MFK79AGwfhXQPz-oeQVe7tJHBCuLpush9zClWDckFebZwa1NiAiFL2brikpd0o6YVTSYYGY/s320/DSC01280.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522345955519122114" />

I forgot to take a true before pic, this is after I removed the hardware and sanding. But you know this dresser, the basic off white with a gold line around the drawer fronts.

This was finally the dresser that I went a little bold on. I picked out Para's "Rescue Me" which is a nice, bright aqua. This is the first time I paid full price for a can of paint. It was hard, I'm not gonna lie! I've never worked with Para before but I really liked it. And I swear this paint smelled like Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream, it was the weirdest thing!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 237px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJi67Pujwo11NLTTfj7JhrY9H77LBCiQ4kixQMPEf1iT1IqUru2fFJoOk4KPJVKfHpDPFBRwDaCO1J1mhTg5jUK9eo_Jg3VPwulfAvWJ1-vaD_PR9Fqy7zIQc0ddMiYmdi1-xsKCKs_ok/s320/DSC01594.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5525358827614779090" />

I primed and painted the hardware with a dark pewter. I wanted to reuse the hardware since I felt nothing else would look right on this style of dresser. I ended up with Minwax Honey Pine, bought from the <a href="http://thefarfifty.blogspot.com/2010/08/mistint-motherload.html"target="blank">Mistint Motherload for $3.49. It's definitely homemade. But it's solid wood and came with a key for the little lock on the drawer.

At first I was going to go with a bright colour for the paint but in the end I just went with boring old off white. I have painted so many things with the same gallon of off white paint it's ridiculous!

I applied this striped paper to the drawer front which I have had in my scrapbook paper stash for over 5 years. Sometimes it pays to hold onto things! When I say interesting what I really mean is fug. Straight outta the 80's with radical geometric shapes. I immediately went to Ikea and bought some covers for them. They were okay, just plain brown, nothing fancy. They were good enough for a while. But then they really started to show some wear and it was definitely time to replace them.

Pretty pathetic looking, right?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRjHNw7_JdDgRh9iubKW8JXgwzDZHOerEBlGEQlHxVU5lugI75JMcQCTuGU1W6wlMGdE0yJyYo0s_IZDX6644qyYghYADgBmZs04m5nwceNtnVPzfIL-IzH5jZ4_fivm8kiZcE_-tkLyA/s320/DSC00873.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501732521600639906" />

I drew some inspiration from a couple pages I had torn out of Canadian House and Home and/or Style at Home and headed to Goodwill.

I really love the texture of these pillows and thought they would really add to the room.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifiC4SNHUfkhyOuyYLAHq1-1P6jKSkhSYqOhCWPCs_itm2wb5MIKl3CRyshBvvBfYNQZ5YqSznlBmCL9L6RAbF0Fe_JIGZ00PB11TdyFRSWs2tckPXRQuqd-Lul_n8814m7Bctt79RUtU/s320/DSC00868.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501733641085296418" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQSvKAJvByzgNTt_akVeeAISOyR3iYlDqY3dSPAR83P5vKrVFzCSaw7PAO40ksRkIR4wszZBtPFxKpBDbOhPi37oekSdd8hpKfl8mNsU_NWEtMBDemM0JR96h58oV8dw_rldfPXG47shk/s320/DSC00869.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501733645322482850" />

I went to the mens sweater section and looked for some neutral knits in good shape. I found a nice cableknit and a plain knit both in beige. I also grabbed a plaid skirt and a red cardigan sweater from the womens section. I took everything home and threw it in wash. When it was all dry I got to work.

I don't have any "befores" of the sweaters but you've seen sweaters before, right?

I took a measurement of the old covers and then measured and cut from the fronts and backs of the two beige sweaters. I put in the pillows and sewed them in. Unfortunately they do not come out for easy washing. One of the sweaters had leather buttons down the front so I took them off and sewed them back down the side of the pillow for a little added interest.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIUGl4jtssC39ozTeiHYDuLKsiHnt9BotjAhJ1hY5AiA58P72jhenq6Nn2Y8UJKB2-bXO_U_tJGQa5NuF9Tam6y7xdpRgRUKRQvLlWUvJge2P0ofzZGGVFvwPSanrBzOh8I1CQfQc9iok/s320/DSC00862.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501737914797685298" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR-b1nXiF7VfOJY5PgIm1JKK0wS0Xeh6pcGuwz0pKnN9P3JKU89U41rTssp8NxYoFpOJSAnQhuPsj10Yt63bFzkeWXain5DTj1oVpIj0TWIz_fbsctE1BXPBlxNbDudg8HjzjXohETWXI/s320/DSC00621.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501737916213112466" />

I had new inserts for the red sweater and the plaid pillows. It was advertised as free and was only 10 minutes away. I emailed right away after it posted but, when I heard back from the girl, she upped the price to $10. Uh...okay...I told her I'd still come to check it out and if I liked it I would pay the $10.

When I got there it turned out to be a girl from my mom group. I haven't actually talked to her much but I still felt like I had to buy it since I knew her.

It wasn't in too bad of shape, there's a chunk missing from the corner of one the drawers but that just adds character, right? The knobs had to go, they didn't match and there was one missing. I still had 6 oversized wooden knobs from the ReStore waiting for a 3 drawer dresser.

It didn't need much in terms of preparation so I quickly got to painting. It got a couple coats of the same off-white that I've been working with for a few dressers. That gallon has been lasting forever!

Then it sat...and sat....and sat. I was waiting for inspiration. It was almost exactly the same as the antique dresser I did but it didn't have a mirror.

I realized it's the perfect height for a change table so I went with that idea. I tried to make it bright, fun and gender neutral, I really like the way the colours turned out!
I kinda felt bad but those are the breaks on 50% day! You gotta be stealthy, like a ninja.

Since I usually do dressers more geared towards little girls I thought it was time to do a dresser for a little boy. So I used the Benjamin Moores, Montpelier that I picked up in the oops section.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXXr1eTLWyI_azsVAGTkvd_XG8nkidFkwZfIFq_vfNc8qQ6c5JUU88ODqhmuZ57OY_PsUfZjCKS4babFwurbqul3JhIpRKz9hayp8Z-SjECmrqXrShs02X-xGThAyJrUYGd5jS7RKK8n4/s320/DSC01016.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509410175586083874" />

I gave the dresser a really good sand (since it had a really thick, super shiny, bad stain job on it) followed by the usual prime & paint. After I painted I was left with a beautiful blank blue/gray canvas. Hmmmm. I really went back and forth on what to paint on the dresser. Numbers, letters, elephants, robots? The possibilities were endless! I was thisclose to doing elephants but, in the end, the alphabet won out. I just thought it would appeal to more people.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYjoS_NabKtXkHrzJg_Qy3y9gAke6R0k-vef_Ntuc3wGYsY4i_Na_P113Vk68Lf82X3oWOqqjR6YzDAp5ww3TgDra4SAGdS0p5N_Z38YnmAdgnIbJFbv5J1YSDdBK1oD1U5WF6YPwSkAM/s320/DSC01062.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509409480033704370" />

I re-used the handles that came on the <a href="http://thefarfifty.blogspot.com/2010/08/it-aint-easy-being-green.html"target=_blank">antique dresser. After I got it home it needed a good cleaning, followed by a good sanding.

After I sanded I put the drawers back and noticed something else that was...um... interesting. Does anyone else see it? Look closely.

Look at the fourth drawer. Doesn't exactly fit, does it? I had to go back and look at the first picture I took before I took out the drawers. I was sure I would have noticed something like that. But sure enough, the bottom drawer (in the top pic) is too short on each side.

Huh. What the heck? How does that even happen? The only thing I can think of is that this drawer is out of the matching 9 drawer dresser that I didn't buy. But that would mean that the 9 drawer dresser now has a drawer that is too big. Oops.

Anyway, at first I figured I would just paint it up and maybe someone won't notice just like I didn't notice. Then I had one of those Aha Moments that Oprah is always talking about. If I could pry off that wood on top of the drawers and then move it over half an inch it would line up with the other drawers. Luckily it wasn't glued down, only a few nails stood between me and 5 perfectly lined up drawers.

I had already painted before I had the Aha Moment so you can see where I moved over those pieces. At this point I'm thinking "why the heck are these pieces on the drawers anyways?"

I planned on doing some podging in the recessed parts anyways so it didn't matter that there was no paint where I moved the wood over. I picked up the paper at Michaels and got to work podging. I'm basically in love with Mod Podge now.

I bought two new knobs for the top drawer since the original ones were broken. Not the typical knobs I would buy but the finish matched the original handles which I planned on re-using. I did, however, remove the plate that was behind the handles to make them look more updated.

This dresser turned out to be a bit more labour intensive than most dressers but who doesn't like busting out the tools, getting inventive and hammering a few nails?
Since I've only ever been into a Pottery Barn one quick time (did you just gasp?) I didn't really know what that challenge meant. Actually, the first I had heard about Pottery Barn was that episode of Friends where Rachel tricks Phoebe into thinking she bought everything at a flea market. Anyone remember that one?

I hopped onto to their website to see what's what. Since shipping to Canada is pretty astronomical with most US companies I usually don't tease myself with such things. A quick look on their website says shipping to Canada is not even an option.

While drooling over the site I think I lost sensation in my eyeballs. Seriously some gorgeous stuff. I just love the soft, warm, natural colours with the rustic elements thrown in.

Like this room. Beautiful. I want to take a nap there.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 238px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghAF18nW6J3D5I-vHhjncQ1qRHKYAFh-FMAb4DjeWWZeQDTWgWI2atw5BQl2KM7xc_Rk8pei26vUQat2Q2GncmoXU2MyFhXGUOEvgzx91HWM8VAdSPYPy9mj3_SdN3FktVnN339gAkSRM/s320/potterybarn0012.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508574581951195426" />

Image: Pottery Barn

Then I saw this picture and I thought the little crate would be perfect to hold my phonebooks and cookbooks which are currently in a messy pile on the counter in the kitchen.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 287px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBXZFZF3_6s8mIp6OrkwOSEhqzmuFZdWaaoOcRhtYVv3G7ZK4QxRDSflHHybIG_fn6XgwzUT1sxoSgS2_4marqc5BsYWZdyy3Gp1G-NitwEVs7jgqKR8vlSJ8AzUxttPjyNf_N7SpUSG8/s320/potterybarn.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508970907400704274" />

Image: Pottery Barn

I had some thin sheets of mahogany from a previous project that I thought would work well for this one. I measured the widest book I had to make sure everything would fit and then just made the measurements of the crate from there. After I dragged the table saw up from the basement and outside (by myself!) I cut out 4 panels that were 3"x9" and 8 panels that were 4"x11". I sanded all the edges then beat up the wood a bit with a hammer and a screwdriver so they weren't so perfect.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-XoT4MC6n_wzax94r4lxVsGuQYxaZypxVwAw9qb1TOro2SQW126_VzZqQyAGKP0hwIKldY7hBe9_CLwb27T2sw5Cj9Rl2FGgu_lHGeh8Qvymy3tIqa2AAglkPk4zoaFtUost0I_GMIDg/s320/DSC01041.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508975239365504434" />

I used a combination of little nails and wood glue to put it together and then added little upholstery tacks to add a little character to it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1PmmKU-bPEkWSSCRpqGswezc3G2x7PQOf582q8M02ues4yP8_P_JQdDNz4spQFgTrKnz_cQqinBuJNwVi5LNorz3Mm9jJM4gZKiyD2dSqfwqxHEXgeUL9zUUqC7IlbaC9QkA5udCz1_U/s320/DSC01035.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508970302045467986" />

I first stained the wood with some Minwax Red Oak stain that I had on hand. I immediately emailed about them and saw they were located nearby too! I was in the car going to pick them within half an hour.
The woman also had this dresser which she let me have for $5. I really love the shape of these old pieces and that they are solid wood.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhRnpyQ3JPKEbVc20-43-j38gaI2NZGCOCsyU0aM5soidMxoqoqF7_LeO0S28_0f4x8s2gvZVgUpKvValjhQcS9fVeV4JJwGK-ncs6GeqBHgAwZraErYaIL_cy8Ak6rrIG6FFcIFLe1rc/s320/DSC00858.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5507125075372127330" />

I gave them a good sand everywhere (especially since one of them had nail polish spilled on the top) then I primed and sprayed them.
